With temperatures in So Cal over 100 degrees today, raw energy bites are the perfect project so I don’t have to turn the oven on. Today, it’s all about salads, hemp heart energy bites, and lots of water!

In keeping with this no-bake cookie mood I’m in, I’ve created another recipe using superfood hemp hearts. I ♥ hemp hearts and even my young daughter will grab a bowl and eat them by the fingers full.

These raw energy bites with hemp hearts, oats, and dates are naturally sweetened and easy to make. Plus, they are happily made with simple everyday ingredients!

Hemp Hearts – A Superfood!

Hemp hearts are an excellent source of omega 3 and 6 and a high-quality complete protein. Four tablespoons, or 1/4 cup, of hemp seeds contain 11 grams of protein and 2.5 grams of fiber. Find out more at WebMD.

Adding hemp seeds to your lifestyle ensures you’re packing in some goodness here and there. They also contain high amounts of essential vitamins and trace minerals that your body needs.

Sprinkle them on salads, soups, or almost any main dish. They are also great added to smoothies and oatmeal. I always keep some handy in the fridge.

Get your healthy, happy hemp on!

Ingredient Notes

In the recipe, a healthy mix of oats, hemp hearts, dates, and cinnamon is processed into a thick dough that’s rolled into healthy energy bites for a nourishing and delicious snack.

Here is everything you will need, plus ingredient substitution ideas:

  • Oats – Use old-fashioned or quick oats.
  • Hemp hearts – We love these organic hemp hearts from Amazon (affiliate link).
  • Dates – I used and recommend Medjool dates, as fresh as possible
  • Pure maple syrup – Feel free to substitute with coconut nectar or date syrup.
  • Cinnamon
  • Vanilla – Vanilla extract, bean paste, or freshly scrapped vanilla bean pods.

How To Make Hemp Heart Energy Bites

(Note – The full printable recipe is at the bottom of this post)

  • Start by adding the oats, hemp hearts, dates, maple syrup, vanilla, and cinnamon to the bowl of your food processor (shown above left), and blend until combined (above right).

  • Scoop out rounded mounds using a 1-tablespoon measuring spoon and pack them into round balls, as shown above.
  • For a finishing touch, roll the balls in optional toppings such as cinnamon, cocoa, shredded coconut, or hemp hearts.

And voila, a healthy snack or dessert that can be enjoyed often!

Top Tips

  • Keep them uniform. To make the balls uniform in size, use a scooper like this 1 tablespoon measuring spoon (affiliate link). It’s super helpful and makes things easier!
  • Keep your hands clean. If the dough starts to stick to the palm of your hands when rolling, wash them in between every few balls for ease.
  • No dates, no worries. If you rather not use dates or don’t have them on hand, you can sub with pure maple syrup using 1 – 2 extra tablespoons pure maple syrup.
  • Add a finishing touch by rolling your finished energy bites in cacao, cinnamon, or hemp hearts, or even shredded coconut.

How To Store

  • Refrigerator: Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for up to 1 week.
  • Freezer: For longer storage, energy bites can be stored in the freezer for 2 – 3 months. To freeze, place the balls on a baking sheet or plate, about 1 inch apart, and place in the freezer for a few hours (this will help them not stick together). Once frozen, store them in freezer-safe ziplock bags or containers. Let thaw in the refrigerator for a few hours before snacking.

No bake, vegan and so easy to make, these healthy hemp heart energy bites are made with simple, wholesome ingredients!

  • Author: Julie | The Simple Veganista
  • Prep Time: 10 min
  • Total Time: 10 minutes
  • Yield: Makes 12 1x
  • Category: Dessert, No-Bake
  • Method: food processor
  • Cuisine: American
  • Diet: Vegan

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup oats, rolled or quick (I used GF)
  • 1/2 cup hemp hearts
  • 6 medjool dates, pitted and chopped
  • 3 tablespoons pure maple syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, optional
  • pinch of salt, optional

Instructions

Mix: Place all ingredients in food processor, blend until combined. Add 1 tablespoon water at time if needed to help the mixture clump up. I used about 1 tablespoon, use at your discretion.

Don’t worry if the dough seems a little too sticky, as it will become a bit stiffer once refrigerated. And if it’s a little sticky it will help when you roll the balls in a coating. If the mixture is too wet, try adding a pinch or two of oats. The dryer they are the more they will be a stiffer, but chewy cookie. The moister they are, they will be more like cookie dough. Both ways are good. :)

Scoop + roll: Next, roll the dough into one inch balls. If dough seems too sticky to roll, refrigerate the dough for about 20 minutes before rolling.

Finishing touch: You can roll the energy bites in a variety of ingredients for a nice finishing touch. I rolled some in hemp seeds, coconut, cinnamon and cacao powder. I wanted to experiment with different coatings. If rolling in powders be sure to gently lift and drop your coated balls a few times an inch or two above a hard surface to let any excess powder fall off.

Makes 12 energy bites

Store: Keep in the refrigerator and eat within 1 – 2 weeks. For longer storage, they can be kept in the freezer for up to 2 – 3 months.

Notes

If you rather not use dates or don’t have them on hand, you can sub with pure maple syrup using 1 – 2 extra tablespoons pure maple syrup, starting with the smaller amount.

Don’t worry about getting all the ingredients exact. If you add/subtract the spices they will still be great. You almost always can’t go wrong with these.

These are great for special occasions and can be made well in advance to keep life a little simpler.

  1. Honestly shocked at how yummy these came out!! I soaked the dates in hot water for 5-10 min, peeled the skin and chopped, they blended up perfectly after that! Thanks so much for this recipe it’s a powerhouse of nutrition!

  2. Nice! I have a huge bag of organic hemp hearts to use so this seems perfect!
Do I have to have a food processor for them to come out well, or could I use a blender???
    Thanks! :)

I haven’t tried with a blender, but you should be able to use one in place of a food processor if needed. Just be sure to stop and scrape down the sides as needed. Enjoy!

  4. Loved the recipe. I made it today for the first time and it turned out so well that I had some as part of my dinner. I doubled the recipe and used a combination of dates and figs as I didn’t have enough of the former.

  5. Never used hemp hearts before! These came together so quickly, I doubled the recipe and still only needed 1 T. of water to help it hold, and they were very easy to form!
